Your pose was that of a friend, such a good, kind friend! You knew that I was lonely; that I had begun to fear that Morgan didn't care as he used to; that I was grateful to have you—no, not you, not you, but any one, any one who would take the trouble to help me fill in the empty hours. I must have been blind! I never guessed people were talking; I didn't realize that they had anything to talk about till the day of Morgan's dreadful mistake—the day he disbelieved me!"
